Leftovers (SDSU Social Venture Challenge)
This social venture aimed to address food insecurity by leveraging machine learning to predict and connect surplus food from restaurants and catering businesses with nonprofits and food banks.
The platform uses a machine learning algorithm to predict food surplus, enabling restaurants to proactively manage excess inventory. Acting as a just-in-time (JIT) system, it facilitates efficient coordination between businesses and nonprofits to ensure surplus food is redistributed before going to waste. Restaurants and catering companies benefit from automated surplus management, data-driven insights, and potential tax incentives for their contributions. Nonprofits gain streamlined access to fresh food, helping them better serve communities in need. By integrating with existing point-of-sale (POS) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, the solution seamlessly fits into the operational workflows of participating businesses. This approach not only reduces food waste but also fosters social impact, sustainability, and stronger community connections. In March, we are pitching our startup idea against other college students from Southern California, showcasing our vision for innovation and social impact.
